MS mystery: why does inflammation smolder even after treatment?
NCT ID NCT06591429
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This observational study at Washington University will use special PET scans to look at ongoing inflammation in the brains of 25 people with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. Researchers want to understand why inflammation persists even after standard treatment. Participants will have scans before and after starting anti-CD20 therapy, and researchers will compare imaging results with spinal fluid samples to see how different types of inflammation relate.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Radiotracers ([11C]-CS1P1, [11C]-DPA-713, [18F]-FDG) and anti-CD20 MS treatment
What this could lead to
If successful, this could reveal why inflammation continues in MS despite treatment, pointing toward new therapies that target smoldering inflammation.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early observational study with only 25 participants, so findings may not apply broadly. It uses imaging and biomarkers, not direct treatment outcomes.
