One cigarette changes eye blood vessels, study finds
NCT ID NCT07261176
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested 40 healthy adults—20 smokers and 20 non-smokers—to see how smoking one cigarette changes blood vessels in the eye. Using special cameras, researchers measured blood vessel size and function before and after smoking. The goal was to understand the immediate effects of smoking on eye health.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
cigarette smoking (0.8 grams nicotine)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help explain how smoking affects eye health and blood flow, possibly leading to better ways to detect early eye damage.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early study with only 40 people. It only looks at short-term effects after one cigarette, so it cannot tell us about long-term damage or risks from smoking.
