First seen Feb 19, 2026 · Last updated May 14, 2026 · Updated 9 times

Summary

This study tested whether mailing free samples of varenicline (a prescription pill) or nicotine patches and lozenges helps smokers quit. 652 daily smokers were randomly assigned to receive a free sample of varenicline, nicotine products, or no sample. Participants completed surveys and daily diaries for 6 months. The goal was to see if simply offering the medication, with no pressure to use it, increases quit rates.
