NCT ID NCT05413122
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests two smoking cessation methods—varenicline pills and nicotine patches with gum—in 660 people with HIV in South Africa. Participants will receive one of these treatments for 12 weeks, along with counseling. The goal is to see which approach works best to help them quit smoking long-term, with follow-up at 26 and 52 weeks.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Varenicline and nicotine replacement therapy (patches and gum)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide an effective, scalable smoking cessation program integrated into HIV care, reducing smoking-related diseases in this population.
What could go wrong
This is a Phase 2/3 trial, so results are not yet proven. The interventions may not work as well in real-world settings, and side effects like nausea or skin irritation are possible.
