Dreaming of better moves: sleep boosts skills learned in your mind
NCT ID NCT03130322
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study looks at how sleep helps the brain strengthen motor skills that were learned just by imagining them. Fifty-one healthy adults practiced finger sequences and trackball tasks while their brain activity was recorded with MEG. The goal is to understand which brain networks are involved when sleep improves these mentally practiced movements, which could eventually guide therapies for people with motor disorders.

What this could lead to
If successful, this could help design better motor imagery therapies for people recovering from movement disorders like stroke.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study in healthy volunteers, not patients. The findings may not directly translate to clinical treatments.
