Sleep apnea may influence best shunt choice for hydrocephalus patients
NCT ID NCT04471740
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at how sleep apnea changes pressure in the brain and belly during sleep in people with normal-pressure hydrocephalus. Researchers want to see if these pressure changes affect how well a surgically placed shunt (a tube that drains fluid from the brain) works. The goal is to find better ways to choose the right shunt and placement for each patient. Thirty adults with normal-pressure hydrocephalus will take part.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
CSF shunt diversion (a surgically placed tube to drain fluid from the brain)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors choose the best type of shunt and placement for each patient, potentially improving symptoms of normal-pressure hydrocephalus.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 30 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The research is observational and does not test a new treatment.
