Can a Flow-Sensitive MRI unlock the secrets of a treatable brain condition?

NCT ID NCT01909960

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study explores whether a special type of MRI called flow MRI can improve the diagnosis and management of normal pressure hydrocephalus, a condition where excess fluid builds up in the brain's cavities. Researchers will measure how cerebrospinal fluid and blood move through the brain in 144 adults with symptoms like walking trouble and memory loss. The goal is to see if these flow measurements can help doctors better decide who might benefit from treatment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Flow MRI (phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging)

What this could lead to

If flow MRI proves useful, it could become a standard tool to diagnose normal pressure hydrocephalus more accurately and guide treatment decisions.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It will not directly improve symptoms, and the added value of flow MRI over standard imaging is still uncertain.
