Sleepless nights may leave brain waste behind

NCT ID NCT02669225

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 26 times

Summary

This study looked at how sleep affects the brain's ability to clear out waste products, specifically amyloid-beta, which is linked to Alzheimer's disease. Twenty-two healthy adults stayed overnight in a clinic twice—once sleeping normally and once staying awake all night. Researchers used brain scans to compare amyloid-beta levels after each night to see if sleep helps remove this waste.
