Skin microbes linked to vitiligo and immunotherapy reactions in melanoma patients

NCT ID NCT04734704

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study explores whether the community of bacteria living on the skin (the skin microbiome) plays a role in vitiligo—a condition that causes white patches—and in side effects from anti-PD-1 immunotherapy for advanced melanoma. Researchers will collect skin swabs from people with vitiligo, melanoma patients who developed vitiligo during treatment, and those who did not. By analyzing the genetic material of skin microbes, they hope to uncover connections that could lead to better understanding of these conditions.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this research could reveal how skin microbes influence autoimmune conditions and treatment side effects, potentially guiding future therapies.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study with a small sample size (57 people). It aims to understand, not treat, so direct patient benefits are not guaranteed.
