Could a common ED drug help heart valve patients breathe easier?
NCT ID NCT07462260
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether sildenafil (the drug in Viagra) can help people with severe lung high blood pressure caused by long-term rheumatic heart valve disease. Researchers will give 100 participants either sildenafil or a placebo three times daily for six weeks. The main goal is to see if the drug improves how far they can walk in six minutes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Sildenafil (a drug that relaxes blood vessels in the lungs)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a short-term treatment to improve exercise ability and heart function in people awaiting heart valve surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, 6-week trial, so results may not apply to long-term use. Sildenafil can cause side effects like headache, flushing, or low blood pressure.
