Could half the magnesium dose after delivery be just as safe?
NCT ID NCT00344058
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study looked at whether giving magnesium sulfate for 12 hours after delivery instead of the usual 24 hours is safe and effective for preventing seizures in women with mild preeclampsia. Researchers enrolled 200 women and compared the two treatment lengths. The goal was to see if a shorter treatment could reduce side effects and hospital time without increasing risks.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
magnesium sulfate
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that a shorter course of magnesium sulfate is just as effective, reducing hospital stays and side effects for women with mild preeclampsia.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study focused on mild cases only. Results may not apply to severe preeclampsia or preterm deliveries, and the shorter regimen might not prevent seizures in all women.
