Two days of arm rest may reveal why muscles weaken faster in type 2 diabetes

NCT ID NCT06750497

First seen Jul 02, 2026 · Last updated Jul 02, 2026

Summary

This study investigates how two days of forearm immobilization (keeping the arm in a cast or sling) changes the way muscles take up glucose and amino acids. Researchers will compare these effects in people with type 2 diabetes and healthy volunteers. The goal is to understand why muscle insulin sensitivity drops so quickly during short periods of inactivity, especially in those with diabetes.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

forearm immobilization

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help explain why muscle weakness and insulin resistance develop quickly in people with type 2 diabetes after short periods of inactivity.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study (26 participants) that only looks at short-term effects. Results may not apply to longer periods of inactivity or to broader populations.
