New ultrasound technique could spot deadly varices without a scope
NCT ID NCT07151885
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing a new, non-invasive way to detect high-risk varices (enlarged veins) in the esophagus and stomach of people with liver cirrhosis. Instead of using a camera down the throat (endoscopy), doctors will use a special ultrasound technique called SHAPE, along with liver stiffness and platelet count measurements. The goal is to see if this combination can accurately identify who needs urgent treatment, potentially making screening safer and more accessible.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
ultrasound contrast agent (for subharmonic imaging)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a non-invasive, safer way to identify patients with high-risk varices, reducing the need for regular endoscopies.
What could go wrong
This is a diagnostic study, not a treatment. The new method may not be accurate enough to replace endoscopy, and results may vary across different patient groups.
