Could a diabetes drug shield Teens' kidneys?
NCT ID NCT07405216
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether dapagliflozin, a drug already used in adults to protect kidneys, can reduce protein leakage in the urine of teenagers with mild chronic kidney disease. Two hundred adolescents aged 14 to 18 will receive either the drug or a placebo for six months. The goal is to see if the drug slows kidney damage and is safe for this age group.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Dapagliflozin (a diabetes drug that protects kidneys)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a new treatment to slow kidney disease in teenagers, reducing the risk of kidney failure later in life.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial in a specific population, so results may not apply broadly. The drug may not reduce protein in urine or could cause side effects like dehydration or infections.
