Could diabetes drugs fix anemia in kidney disease?

NCT ID NCT07334145

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study will test whether SGLT2 inhibitors, a type of diabetes drug, can help correct anemia in people with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Anemia is common in CKD and often requires iron or hormone injections, which have side effects. The trial will enroll 60 adults with CKD stages 1-4 and mild anemia, measuring changes in hemoglobin levels over time.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

SGLT2 inhibitors (dapagliflozin or empagliflozin)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a new way to manage anemia in CKD patients, potentially reducing the need for iron or ESA injections.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 60 participants. The effect on anemia may be modest or not clinically significant, and there are known risks like dehydration or diabetic ketoacidosis.
