New antibiotic cocktail aims to slash infection risk in severe bone breaks

NCT ID NCT04678154

First seen Jun 01, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 3 times

Summary

This study tests whether a new antibiotic protocol can prevent infections in people with severe open fractures (where the bone breaks through the skin). The experimental group gets antibiotics applied directly to the wound before closure, plus extended systemic antibiotics. The control group gets standard care. The goal is to see if the new approach lowers infection rates. The trial is currently recruiting 1,200 participants.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Vancomycin and Tobramycin applied directly to the wound before closure, plus at least 72 hours of systemic antibiotics

What this could lead to

If successful, this could reduce the risk of serious infections after severe open fractures, potentially improving recovery and reducing the need for additional surgeries.

What could go wrong

This is still a research study, and the new antibiotic protocol may not prove more effective than current standard care. There are also risks of antibiotic side effects or allergic reactions.

Conditions

The condition(s) this trial relates to.

tibia fracture
