Heart rhythm mystery: do hidden triggers explain why women fare worse after AF ablation?
NCT ID NCT07580547
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This observational study looks at why women with atrial fibrillation (AF) tend to have higher recurrence rates after standard ablation. Researchers will map the heart's electrical activity in 100 patients right after routine pulmonary vein isolation to find extra trigger spots that may be missed. Participants are followed for one year to see if those hidden spots lead to AF coming back.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could explain why women often have worse outcomes after standard AF ablation and point toward tailored treatment approaches.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It maps but does not ablate extra sites, so it cannot directly improve outcomes. Results may not lead to immediate changes in care.
