Classroom air cleaners could cut Kids' colds
NCT ID NCT05953233
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether portable HEPA air cleaners placed in elementary school classrooms can lower the amount of viruses in the air and reduce infections among students, teachers, and their families. About 200 participants from grades K-5 will be randomly assigned to classrooms with either working HEPA cleaners or sham cleaners that look the same but don't filter air. Researchers will track who gets sick and test for viruses in the air and in nose swabs.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
HEPA air cleaner
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that simple air cleaners in schools help prevent respiratory infections in children and their families.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study in a few schools, so results may not apply everywhere. The sham cleaners may also reduce infections, making it hard to see a clear benefit.
