New TB drug candidate passes first safety check in humans

NCT ID NCT05824091

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested a new drug called MK-7762 in 119 healthy adults to see if it is safe and how the body processes it. Participants received either the drug or a placebo in single or multiple doses. The goal was to check for side effects and measure drug levels in the blood, not to treat tuberculosis. This is a very early step in developing a possible new TB medicine.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

MK-7762 (TBD09)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a new drug for tuberculosis, potentially offering a safer or more effective treatment option.

What could go wrong

This is a very early, first-in-human study focused only on safety in healthy volunteers. It does not test whether the drug actually treats TB, and many early-stage drugs fail to show benefit in later trials.
