Sleep tracking app may keep depression away after hospital stay

NCT ID NCT02679768

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested whether a program called Circadian Reinforcement Therapy (CRT) — which helps people strengthen their sleep-wake cycle and daily routines — could reduce the chance of depression coming back after leaving a psychiatric hospital. 103 adults with major depression used an electronic self-monitoring tool to track mood and sleep. The goal was to see if this approach leads to faster recovery and fewer relapses.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Circadian Reinforcement Therapy (behavioral intervention focusing on sleep-wake cycle and daytime activities)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple, non-drug way to help people with depression stay well after leaving the hospital.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed study with 103 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The intervention is behavioral, so effects may be modest and hard to sustain long-term.
