Heart ultrasound may uncover silent AFib in thousands
NCT ID NCT07278089
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study is testing whether certain heart ultrasound findings can identify people who might have hidden atrial fibrillation (AF), a common heart rhythm problem that raises stroke risk. Researchers will enroll 3000 participants with abnormal ultrasound results and randomly assign them to either extended heart rhythm monitoring every 3 months or usual care. The goal is to see if the extra monitoring catches more AF cases than standard practice.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
extended continuous ECG monitoring
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a simple way to identify people at high risk for hidden atrial fibrillation, enabling earlier detection and treatment to prevent strokes.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage screening study, not a treatment trial. The extended monitoring may not detect significantly more cases than standard care, and the results may not apply to broader populations.
