Can zapping the brain and a computer game lift depression?
NCT ID NCT07636694
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether combining a brain stimulation technique called rTMS with a computer-based thinking exercise (CBM) can reduce negative thinking and depressive symptoms in people with mild-to-moderate depression. About 180 adults will receive either real or fake rTMS, and do the computer task either at the same time or in separate sessions. Researchers will measure changes in mood, thinking patterns, and brain activity before and after treatment.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and cognitive bias modification (CBM)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a new non-drug treatment for depression that combines brain stimulation with a simple computer task to reduce negative thinking.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage study with only 180 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The effects may be small or not last long, and rTMS can cause mild side effects like headache or scalp discomfort.
