Parkinson's drug repurposed to fight kidney disease?
NCT ID NCT06291116
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a rotigotine skin patch, a drug used for Parkinson's disease, is safe for people with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). ADPKD causes fluid-filled cysts in the kidneys and can lead to kidney failure. The trial will give 120 adults either standard care plus the rotigotine patch or standard care alone for 24 months, monitoring side effects and early signs of kidney protection.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
rotigotine (a dopamine agonist given as a skin patch)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a new way to slow kidney function loss and heart problems in people with ADPKD.
What could go wrong
This is an early Phase 2 safety study with only 120 people. It may not show clear benefit, and side effects like skin reactions or behavior changes are possible.
