Nanoparticles may ease root canal pain, study hopes

NCT ID NCT07327996

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether adding tiny antibacterial particles called mesoporous silica nanoparticles to standard root canal medication can reduce pain and kill more bacteria. Forty-two adults with infected lower molar teeth will receive one of three treatments: standard medication, nanoparticles alone, or a mix of both. Pain is measured over 72 hours and bacteria levels are checked before and after treatment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

mesoporous silica nanoparticles combined with calcium hydroxide

What this could lead to

If it works, this could lead to a more effective root canal treatment that causes less pain and reduces infection.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 42 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The nanoparticles are new and their long-term safety is unknown.
