Bone drug showdown: which works better for Steroid-Weakened bones?
NCT ID NCT06472050
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looked at two osteoporosis medications—romosozumab and denosumab—in 54 people who take long-term steroids and have weak bones. Participants first received either romosozumab for 12 months followed by denosumab, or denosumab alone for 24 months. Then everyone stayed on denosumab for another 2 years. The goal was to see how their spine and hip bone density changed over 4 years.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Romosozumab (Evenity) and Denosumab (Prolia)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could show that switching from romosozumab to denosumab maintains or improves bone density better than denosumab alone for people on long-term steroids.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, completed extension study with only 54 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. It only measures bone density, not actual fracture reduction.
