Can a smartphone app with rewards boost opioid treatment success after an emergency?
NCT ID NCT05180669
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested a mobile app that uses rewards to encourage people with opioid use disorder to start and stick with medication-assisted treatment after an emergency room visit. 41 adults from two hospitals were given access to the app for 12 weeks. The goal was to see if the app helped more people schedule and complete their first treatment appointment and stay abstinent from opioids.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
OARSCM mobile app (reward-based platform) and MyMAT educational app
What this could lead to
If successful, this app-based approach could help more people with opioid addiction start and stay on medication-assisted treatment, reducing relapse and overdose risk.
What could go wrong
This was a small, early-phase trial that was terminated early, so results are limited. The app may not work for everyone, and long-term benefits are unproven.
