Can a diabetes drug stop prediabetes in its tracks?
NCT ID NCT07392151
First seen Feb 06, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 20 times
Summary
This study tests whether glucose-lowering medications (semaglutide and possibly dapagliflozin) can reverse prediabetes and prevent complications like eye, kidney, and nerve damage in people with heart disease. About 158 participants with prediabetes and coronary artery disease will be randomly assigned to either intensive treatment or standard care, and followed for two years. A third group of 50 people with normal blood sugar will serve as a comparison.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Semaglutide and possibly Dapagliflozin
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that treating prediabetes with these drugs can restore normal blood sugar and reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small trial (158 participants) and the drugs are not yet approved for prediabetes. Results may not apply to everyone, and side effects from the medications are possible.
