Can weight training strengthen muscles in young CMT patients?

NCT ID NCT07152197

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether an 8-week supervised resistance exercise program can improve muscle quality, physical function, and quality of life in young people aged 15–29 with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (a type of hereditary nerve disorder). Participants will do lower-body exercises three times a week, with weights gradually increasing. The researchers will compare results between those with the condition and healthy volunteers to see if the exercise helps more in those with greater baseline weakness.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Progressive resistance exercise training (supervised lower-limb exercises)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could show that resistance exercise is a safe, effective way to improve muscle function and quality of life in young people with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial with only 22 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The exercise program is short (8 weeks), and long-term benefits are unknown.
