Ultrasound could spot hidden fluid that sends heart patients back to hospital
NCT ID NCT07682298
First seen Jul 02, 2026 · Last updated Jul 08, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study tests whether ultrasound scans can detect leftover fluid in the lungs and veins of people hospitalized for heart failure. About 580 adults will get scans at several points during their stay, but doctors won't see the results. Researchers will then track who is readmitted or dies within 90 days to see if the scans predict problems better than standard exams.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could help doctors identify which heart failure patients need more treatment before leaving the hospital, potentially reducing readmissions.
- What could go wrong
- This is an observational study, not a treatment trial, so it won't directly improve outcomes. The ultrasound method may not prove better than standard checks.
