Can reused heart catheters cut costs and waste without risking patient safety?
NCT ID NCT07389434
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares reprocessed (cleaned and re-sterilized) ablation catheters to brand-new ones in 200 adults with atrial fibrillation undergoing pulmonary vein isolation. The goal is to see if the reused catheters are just as safe and effective, while also being cheaper and better for the environment. Participants are randomly assigned to receive either a new or reprocessed catheter, and the research team will measure procedure time, safety, costs, and waste.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
reprocessed ablation catheter
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that reprocessed catheters are a safe, cheaper, and more eco-friendly option for treating atrial fibrillation.
What could go wrong
This is a feasibility study, not a large-scale trial. Reprocessed catheters may have higher failure or infection risks, and results may not apply to all patients.
