Arm cuff before surgery may shield heart, trial suggests
NCT ID NCT02427867
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether briefly inflating a blood-pressure cuff on the arm before non-cardiac surgery can reduce heart damage in high-risk patients. Over 1,200 participants will receive either the cuff procedure or no intervention. The goal is to see if this simple, low-cost technique lowers cardiac troponin levels, a marker of heart injury.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- remote ischemic preconditioning (blood-pressure cuff inflation on the arm)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a safe, low-cost way to prevent heart complications during non-cardiac surgery.
- What could go wrong
- This is the first large trial in non-cardiac surgery, so results are uncertain. The effect may be smaller than hoped or not translate to better outcomes.
