Arm cuff trick may shield heart during surgery

NCT ID NCT05733208

First seen Apr 23, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 4 times

Summary

This study tests a simple, non-invasive technique called remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) to prevent heart injury in patients at high risk for heart problems who are having major abdominal surgery. RIPC involves briefly inflating a blood pressure cuff on the arm to trigger the body's natural defenses. The trial includes 766 participants and compares RIPC to a sham procedure to see if it reduces heart damage after surgery.
