A simple phone call could be the key to helping smokers quit
NCT ID NCT07779161
First seen Aug 21, 2026 · Last updated Aug 21, 2026
Summary
This trial tests whether different types of appointment reminder calls can improve attendance at a smoking cessation clinic. Adult smokers scheduled for a follow-up visit will receive either a standard reminder call or a call that includes behavioral 'nudges' based on the MINDSPACE framework. The goal is to see which method helps more people show up for their appointments, which could ultimately support their quit attempts.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Behavioral interventions: standard phone call reminder vs. phone call with MINDSPACE-based nudging elements
- What this could lead to
- If effective, simple reminder strategies could significantly increase attendance at smoking cessation clinics, potentially improving quit rates and public health outcomes.
- What could go wrong
- The trial is relatively small and early-stage, and the effect of reminders may vary by population. Also, the MINDSPACE-based call may not outperform the standard call.
