Could 3 days beat 14? new study tests shorter catheter use for sudden urinary blockage
NCT ID NCT07283484
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
Acute urinary retention (AUR) is a sudden inability to urinate, often due to an enlarged prostate. The RELIEF study compares removing the catheter after 3 days versus the usual 14 days in 478 men. All participants receive a catheter and prostate medication. The goal is to see if a shorter duration is equally successful at restoring normal urination, while reducing discomfort and complications.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- alpha-blocker medication (tamsulosin, silodosin, or alfuzosin)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could lead to shorter, more comfortable catheter use for men with acute urinary retention, reducing infections and improving quality of life.
- What could go wrong
- This is a mid-sized trial, and results may not apply to all patients. A shorter catheter duration might increase the risk of needing re-catheterization.
