One-shot hormone blocker may prevent repeat urinary blockages in men

NCT ID NCT07733934

First seen Jul 29, 2026 · Last updated Jul 30, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This phase 2 trial tests whether a single injection of teverelix DP, a hormone-blocking drug, can shrink the prostate and improve urinary function in men who recently experienced a first episode of acute urinary retention due to an enlarged prostate. About 126 men aged 45 and older will receive either a 90 mg or 120 mg dose of teverelix DP or a placebo. The study measures changes in prostate volume over 12 weeks and tracks whether participants avoid repeat urinary retention or the need for surgery over a year.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
teverelix DP, a GnRH antagonist given as a single injection
What this could lead to
If effective, a single injection of teverelix DP could shrink the prostate and help men avoid repeat urinary retention or the need for surgery.
What could go wrong
This is an early-phase trial with only 126 participants, so results may not apply broadly. GnRH antagonists can cause side effects like hot flashes and hormonal changes.
