Meal tests could reveal hidden clues to deadly refeeding syndrome

NCT ID NCT07674589

First seen Jun 29, 2026 · Last updated Jun 30, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study investigates refeeding syndrome, a dangerous metabolic complication that can occur when severely malnourished patients start receiving nutrition again. Researchers will give a mixed-meal tolerance test to 15 adults who need a feeding tube after a month of very low food intake. By measuring blood glucose, hormones, and metabolites before and after the meal, and again after 3-6 months of tube feeding, the study aims to uncover how the body responds to refeeding and identify potential markers that could predict who is at highest risk.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could identify biomarkers to predict refeeding syndrome risk, helping doctors personalize nutritional care for malnourished patients.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage observational study with only 15 participants. Findings may not apply to all patients and may not lead to a clinical test.
