Sparkling water vs. soda: a tasty way to cut sugar in teens?

NCT ID NCT07223151

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether replacing sugary sodas with unsweetened sparkling water can reduce added sugar intake and improve health in Black/African American and Latine adolescents with obesity who love sweet drinks. For 4 weeks, participants swap their sodas for one of three options: flavored sparkling water, plain water, or gradually less sweet drinks. Researchers will measure changes in taste preferences, diet quality, and metabolic health over 8 weeks.

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple, low-cost way to help teens cut added sugar and improve their diet and metabolic health.
