New radiation technique may help rectal cancer patients avoid surgery

NCT ID NCT02505750

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 24 times

Summary

This study tests whether a special type of internal radiation (contact X-ray brachytherapy) can help more people with early rectal cancer keep their rectum compared to standard external radiation. About 148 adults with small, early-stage tumors will receive standard chemoradiation followed by one of the two boost methods. The goal is to see if the internal radiation increases the chance of organ preservation at 3 years without the need for major surgery.
