Eye drop showdown: which works best for dry eye during cataract surgery?
NCT ID NCT07397949
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares two common eye drops—rebamipide and diquafosol—for managing dry eye in people having cataract surgery. Sixty adults with mild to moderate dry eye will use one of the drops four times a day, starting one month before surgery and continuing for three months after. Researchers will check tear film stability and dry eye symptoms to see if one treatment is as good as the other.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Rebamipide 2% ophthalmic solution and Diquafosol 3% ophthalmic solution
What this could lead to
If one eye drop is shown to be as effective as the other, doctors may have more options to manage dry eye around cataract surgery, improving comfort and vision outcomes.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 60 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. There is also a chance neither treatment proves clearly better.
