Summary

Researchers are testing a community-led prevention program called Qungasvik-Healthy Hearts in three rural Alaska Native communities. The program adapts traditional Yup'ik practices such as hunting, gathering, and fishing to see whether they can reduce risk factors for heart and cerebrovascular disease and improve mental health. About 300 youth, young adults, and elders will take part, with activity trackers, blood pressure checks, diet surveys, and questionnaires measuring social and cultural connectedness.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Qungasvik-Healthy Hearts, a culturally grounded community preventive program built around traditional Yup'ik hunting, gathering, and fishing practices
What this could lead to
If it works, this could give rural Alaska Native communities a culturally rooted way to lower heart and stroke risk and support mental health. It could also shape how prevention programs are designed with and for Indigenous communities elsewhere.
What could go wrong
This is an early-phase, community-level study, so it may not show clear health effects. Results from three rural Alaska communities may not apply to other places, and participation depends on people taking part in the activities.
