Rural smokers get a new ally: your local pharmacist
NCT ID NCT05660525
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a program called QuitAid, where pharmacists coach rural smokers on quitting. About 768 participants from Appalachia will get nicotine patches, and some will also get lozenges, text support, or phone counseling. The goal is to see which combination works best and whether the program is practical for real-world use.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Nicotine replacement therapy (patch and lozenge)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide an effective, scalable smoking cessation program tailored for rural communities, reducing smoking rates and related diseases.
What could go wrong
This is a pragmatic implementation trial, not a test of a new drug. Results may vary by pharmacy and participant adherence, and the program may not be cost-effective or sustainable long-term.
