New nanoparticle therapy tested for autoimmune liver disease – first human trial complete

NCT ID NCT06798454

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This first-in-human study tested a single dose of PVT201, a nanoparticle-based drug, in 24 people: healthy volunteers and patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) or primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). The main goal was to check safety and how the drug moves through the body. All patients received the drug, while some healthy volunteers got a placebo. This early research does not yet test whether the drug works, but it is a necessary step toward developing a new treatment for these autoimmune liver diseases.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

PVT201 (Navacim), a nanoparticle-based therapy designed to target immune cells involved in autoimmune disease

What this could lead to

If successful, this could pave the way for a new treatment that controls autoimmune liver diseases like PBC without lifelong medication.

What could go wrong

This is a very early Phase 1 trial with only 24 participants, focused on safety. It is too small to prove effectiveness, and the approach is novel, so it may not work as hoped.
