Artificial intelligence may help decide who gets a liver first
NCT ID NCT06723275
First seen Jul 29, 2026 · Last updated Jul 30, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether artificial intelligence can more accurately predict which patients on the liver transplant waiting list are at highest risk of dying or becoming too sick for surgery. Researchers will follow 630 adults with severe liver disease or liver cancer across five European countries, collecting blood, urine, and tissue samples along with detailed health data. The goal is to validate new AI-based models that could eventually replace current scoring systems and improve how donor livers are allocated.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could lead to fairer and more accurate systems for allocating donor livers to the patients who need them most urgently.
- What could go wrong
- This is an observational study, not a treatment trial, so it won't directly help participants. The AI models may not prove more accurate than current methods.
