Brain tumor patients get infused with a genetically altered herpes virus
NCT ID NCT06126744
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This early-stage trial is testing a specially designed herpes virus, MVR-C5252, that is injected directly into brain tumors in people whose high-grade glioma has returned. The virus is modified to attack cancer cells and boost the immune system. The main goal is to see if it is safe and to find the best dose, with a later stage checking if it helps control the cancer.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
MVR-C5252 (a modified herpes simplex virus 1 that carries immune-boosting components)
What this could lead to
If this works, it could point toward a new way to treat aggressive brain cancers that have come back after standard therapy.
What could go wrong
This is a very early Phase 1 trial with only 51 people, focused on safety. The virus may not shrink tumors or improve survival, and there are risks from the injection and the virus itself.
