New ear test could spot the cause of pulsatile tinnitus

NCT ID NCT06290999

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested a special ear test called multifrequential admittancemetry to see if it can help diagnose pulsatile tinnitus, a condition where people hear a rhythmic sound in their ear. 36 adults with pulsatile tinnitus had the test along with a standard ear exam. The goal was to find a link between the test results and the tinnitus, which could lead to a better way to diagnose the underlying cause.

What this could mean

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a new, non-invasive diagnostic test for pulsatile tinnitus, helping doctors identify the cause more easily.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed study focused on diagnosis, not treatment. The test may not prove accurate enough for routine use, and results may not apply to all patients.
