Can a special PET scan better track prostate cancer?

NCT ID NCT04030338

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Aug 06, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study is testing whether a type of PET scan called PSMA PET is more accurate than standard scans (like CT or bone scans) for monitoring prostate cancer. About 58 men with progressive prostate cancer will receive an injection of a radioactive tracer and then undergo PET/CT imaging. The goal is to see if changes in the scan can predict cancer progression and survival better than usual methods.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
18F-DCFPyL-iPSMA or 68Ga-HBED-iPSMA (radioactive tracers for PET scans)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that PSMA PET scans are a better way to monitor prostate cancer, helping doctors make more informed treatment decisions.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study (58 participants) focused on imaging accuracy, not treatment. The scans may not prove better than current methods, and results may not apply to all patients.
