Magic mushroom therapy targets inherited trauma

NCT ID NCT06899165

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) combined with therapy can help reduce depression, anxiety, and stress in adults whose parents survived genocide. One hundred participants will receive a single 25mg dose under supervision, followed by six weekly therapy sessions. The goal is to see if this approach is safe and can ease the psychological burden passed down through generations.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Psilocybin (a psychedelic drug) given as a 25mg capsule, plus weekly therapy sessions

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a new way to ease depression and anxiety in people carrying trauma from their parents' experiences.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial with no placebo group, so results may not be definitive. Psychedelics can cause intense emotional experiences and temporary distress.
