Scientists launch study to unravel mysterious chronic itch
NCT ID NCT05678309
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study aims to collect blood, skin swabs, skin biopsies, and questionnaire data from 175 adults with chronic itch that has no known skin cause (pruritus sine materia). Researchers hope to better describe the condition and uncover clues about what drives it. Participants will provide samples at the start and fill out surveys about their itch and quality of life over time.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could provide a clearer picture of what causes chronic itch without a known skin disease, pointing toward better diagnosis or future treatments.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It will not directly help participants and may not lead to any new therapies.
