New prostate cancer screening method aims to cut unnecessary biopsies
NCT ID NCT06238661
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This pilot study is testing a new screening pathway for prostate cancer in men aged 55-65. Instead of relying only on PSA blood tests, participants with elevated PSA will also get a risk assessment and an MRI. The goal is to better distinguish between slow-growing cancers that don't need treatment and aggressive ones that do, potentially reducing unnecessary biopsies and improving early detection.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this screening approach could reduce unnecessary biopsies and better identify aggressive prostate cancers early.
What could go wrong
This is a pilot study, so results are preliminary. The new method may not prove better than current PSA-only screening in larger populations.
