New study aims to find safer sedation method for lengthy gut procedures

NCT ID NCT07305857

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study will compare two methods of giving the sedative propofol during a procedure called endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), which removes early-stage growths from the stomach or colon. One method is manual, where the doctor adjusts the dose by hand; the other uses a computer-controlled pump to maintain a steady level. The goal is to see which method leads to better breathing, faster recovery, and more stable sedation. Fifty adults aged 18 to 75 will take part.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

propofol

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors choose a safer and more effective way to give sedation during long endoscopic procedures, potentially improving patient recovery and reducing breathing problems.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 50 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. It compares two existing methods, so no new drug or breakthrough is being tested.
